Description

A "national marriage enrichment" conference, presumptuously titled: "A Time for Hope: Finally; Good News About Marriage!" was held in Saskatoon March 19-20, 2010. It was sponsored by the Diocese of Saskatoon's Marriage Task Force. Although the conferences inception occurred during the administration of Bishop Albert LeGatt, it is worth noting that many planning decisions were undertaken in the absence of a presiding bishop. (The ordination of Saskatoon's new prelate, Donald Bolen, was celebrated a week after this conference took place.) Despite the occasional positive note, the marriage conference was a disappointment. Not only did it fall short of delivering the 'enrichment' it promised, but it provided fodder for scandal and dissension (as if the Church on any level required more). In a nutshell, this was not a Catholic conference. My assertion may rouse ire or defensiveness, perhaps prompting some to ask, Pilate-like: Catholic--what is that? Some believe it means being faithful to the Magisterium, Scripture, and all the teaching and tradition of the Church ("yesterday; today and forever"); others hold (ironically) what they consider broader, more "inclusive" views. It was in accordance with the second ethos that the conference was presented.
